Debian 4.0 on iBook and Getting rid of Mac OS X

Pick up the net installer which will make the job pretty easy:
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r3 (pick your poison this is what I am using)

I like iso-cd you can find this here:cd-iso/"etch" (e.g grab the debian-40r3-powerpc-netinst.iso it's all you need)

Next burn the iso image onto a cdrom with something easy like this if you have a another linux box:
cdrecord dev=/dev/hdc debian-40r3-powerpc-netinst.iso (any generic data burn will do as well)

Now open the cd tray on your ibook and insert your freshly shorn cd and reboot.

About the time you hear the chime on reboot depress the letter "c" key on the keyboard,
hold it until the ibook boots into the debian installer and you are ready to go.

When it comes to disk partitioning the "guided" method with the defaults /home /usr /var /tmp
is an easy starting point.

Things can be a little tricky since macs need a "special macboot" small boot partition EVEN WHEN USING LINUX.
So if you don't know what you are doing be careful!!

The "guided" method is safe in my experience go here if you want to read more.

Some misc. issues:

--Make sure you have an internet connection.

--I used dhcp and ftp to net install the packages using a hardcoded ip address(due to my router).

--No provisions to ever boot Mac OS X go here if you want to dual boot or try more aggressive partitioning.

--I have also used Debian testing from here:weekly-builds/"lenny" but the installers can be flakey.

--With "lenny" installs I did a basic install and then added what I needed, since the installer would not let me use
a hardcoded address for ftp(!!sucks).
