README for Symantec Event Library Files (SYMEVNT)

2/22/2000

1) What is SYMEVNT?

What is SYMEVNT? SYMEVNT is a set of files ( more specifically, SYMEVNT.386 and
SYMEVNT1.DLL for the Windows 3.x operating systems ) that report various system
data to Symantec Utilities, including Norton Utilities, Norton Desktop for
Windows, pcAnywhere, Norton Administrator for Networks (NAN), and the Norton
AntiVirus (3.0x and 95). This data lets us protect your data and manage your
files more efficiently than would otherwise be possible, since the code that
tracks file creation and deletion, for example, only has to be loaded into
memory once, instead of being loaded in a different form by all of the above
products.

This file includes version 10.3.1.6 of the SYMEVNT files for Windows 3.x

2) Do I need these files if my machine is already running correctly?

In a nutshell, if all of your applications are running correctly, you don't need
to install these newer versions. If you're receiving version mismatch errors or
error messages about missing or damaged SYMEVNT files you definitely need these
files. If one or more Symantec applications is not running correctly, or if
you're trying to troubleshoot an apparent conflict between a Symantec product
and another application, you may want to try these files if they're newer than
what is presently on your system. All versions of SYMEVNT are fully backwards-
compatible, meaning that they will work correctly with Symantec products that
predate them.

3) How do I install these files?

*****Instructions For Updating Computers Running Windows NT, 95, and 98*****

If you are using Windows NT 4.0 or later, or Windows 95 or 98, you should
download the file SEVINST.EXE from the SYMEVNT files folder on Symantec's FTP
Server. The direct URL to this update file is:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/symevnt/sevinst.exe

After downloading, simply run this install program to automatically update your
shared Symevent files under these operating systems.

*****Instructions For Updating Computers Running Windows 3.x*****

a) Place the SYMEVNT.EXE file in a temporary directory and execute it to expand
the three SYMEVNT files.

b) Exit Windows.

c) Copy the SYMEVNT files from the temporary directory to your \Windows\System
directory. For example, if you expanded SYMEVNT.EXE in the C:\temp directory
and your Windows directory is C:\Windows, you would type:

copy c:\temp\symevnt.386 c:\windows\system <Enter>
copy c:\temp\symevnt1.dll c:\windows\system <Enter>

Answer yes when it asks you to overwrite the existing files.

If you are running a shared installation of Windows from a network, these files
need to go into the shared Windows directory on the network.

d) Restart Windows--type Win or press the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys together.

4) How are these files used under normal conditions?

Under Windows 3.x, Symantec applications that use SYMEVNT copy SYMEVNT.386 and
SYMEVNT1.DLL to your \Windows\System directory. A line is also added to the
[386Enh] section of your SYSTEM.INI:

device=symevnt.386

This line causes SYMEVNT to load when you start Windows.

Under Windows 95, 32-bit Symantec applications install SYMEVNT.386, SYMEVNT1.DLL
and S32EVNT1.DLL to your \Program Files\Symantec folder and to the
\Windows\System folder. Registry keys are added in the following locations:

**HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\SymEvnt

    StaticVxD="C:\Program Files\Symantec\SYMEVNT.386"

**HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Shared Usage\<name of symevnt file>

Under the subkeys for SYMEVNT.386, SYMEVNT1.DLL and S32EVNT1.DLL, the name
and location of each program that uses that particular file is indicated.

**HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs

This key basically holds the same information as the previous key, except
that it does so for every piece of software on your system, not just Symantec's.
The values for the three SYMEVNT files indicate how many programs use that
particular shared resource, so that if you had NAV95, NU95 and NN95 on your
system, each line would show the number 3

Note that the number of times each SYMEVNT file is being used should match in
each of the last two keys. For example, if the ...\Symantec\Shared Usage key
indicates that NU and PCA are using SYMEVNT.386, the
...Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs key should show this file followed by the
number two (2).

Also note that if you are running Windows 95 and you ever had a Symantec 16- bit
application such as NDW or PCA 2.0x installed on your system, you likely have
both sets of SYMEVNT files present as well as the registry entries and the
SYSTEM.INI line. The files in the \Windows\System directory, and the line in the
SYSTEM.INI are generally not needed in Windows 95, as the files in \Program
Files\Symantec should be loaded first from the registry.

5) Feedback

If you notice any problems after using these SYMEVNT files, replace your
original copies from the backups you made and call technical support. Similarly,
if you notice that a copy of SYMEVNT.EXE it outdated, corrupt or missing, call
technical support. Tell the technical support representative where you
downloaded this file from, the versions (or dates) of SYMEVNT originally on the
machine, the versions (or dates) include in the SYMEVNT.EXE file and the nature
of the problem you encountered.

The proper technical support phone number for the Symantec product you are using
is written on the back side of you product's user manual.
